Abstract: The radiation fields (i. e., elevation patterns) of HF coastal antennas are computed for several possible terrain profiles near land-sea boundaries. The numerical technique for evaluating the radiation fields is compared with analytical formulas if the latter exist for the specific profile in question. The results appear to indicate that adequate low-angle coverage can be obtained from an antenna on a sloping beach using vertical polarization without the use of a ground screen or sea water in front of the antenna.
