Estimated Cost of a Submarine Fiber Cable System

Robert L. Gallawa

Abstract: Thia report ia based on published cost figures of the TAT-6 submarine coaxial cable system which went into service on July 27, 1976. Assuming readiness of long wavelength (1300 nm) devices by the late 1980s, we project the expected cost of a fiber cable system based onthe TAT-6 experience. The study show an expected normalize cost savings (dollars per channel kilometer) of 27 to 52 percent, in constant dollars.

Keywords: optical fiber; economy; fiber cost; guided waves; submarine cable systems
